Synced Patterns

Introduction

Synced patterns are special reusable content blocks that automatically update across your entire website when edited in one location. This makes it much easier to maintain consistent content throughout your site. This tutorial will guide you through creating, using, and updating synced patterns.

What Are Synced Patterns?

Synced patterns are:

  • Reusable sections of content that can be used across multiple pages or posts
  • Centrally managed, allowing you to update content in one place and have it reflect everywhere
  • Indicated by a purple highlight in the editor
  • Stored in your pattern library for easy access

Step-by-Step Tutorial

Step 1: Creating a Synced Pattern from Existing Content

  1. Navigate to the page where you have the content you want to convert to a synced pattern
  2. Open the document overview to see all sections on the page
  3. Find the section you want to convert to a synced pattern
  4. Click the three dots (⋮) menu on that section
  5. Select “Create Pattern” from the dropdown menu
  6. In the dialog box that appears:
    • Enter a name for your pattern (e.g., “My Header”)
    • Choose an appropriate category for your pattern
    • Make sure the “Synced” toggle is turned ON
  7. Click “Add” to create the synced pattern
  8. Notice that the section now has a purple highlight, indicating it’s a synced pattern
  9. Save your page to preserve these changes

Step 2: Editing a Synced Pattern

Method 1: Editing from a Page Where It’s Used

  1. Navigate to any page where the synced pattern is being used
  2. Click on the synced pattern (identified by its purple highlight)
  3. Click “Edit Original” button that appears
  4. Make your desired changes to the pattern
  5. Click “Save” to update the pattern
  6. The changes will now be reflected everywhere this pattern is used across your site

Method 2: Editing from the Pattern Library

  1. Navigate to the admin area
  2. Go to “Advanced” in the menu
  3. Select “Patterns”
  4. Find your pattern under “My Patterns”
  5. Click on the pattern to open it for editing
  6. Make your desired changes
  7. Click “Save” to update the pattern everywhere it’s being used

Step 3: Adding a Synced Pattern to a Page

  1. Navigate to the page where you want to add your existing synced pattern
  2. Click the “+” button to open the block inserter
  3. Select “Patterns” from the options
  4. Search for your pattern by name
  5. Click on your pattern to insert it into the page
  6. If needed, drag the pattern to the desired position on your page
  7. Save your page

Benefits of Using Synced Patterns

  • Consistency: Maintain uniform content across all pages
  • Efficiency: Update content once instead of editing multiple pages
  • Time-saving: Make site-wide changes quickly and easily
  • Flexibility: Use the same content blocks across various pages and posts

Notes:

  • You can also create non-synced patterns by turning the “Synced” toggle OFF when creating a pattern
  • You can also detach a synced pattern that’s been added to a page or post so that it is no longer synced
  • Non-synced patterns will be available in your pattern library but won’t update across pages when edited
  • Synced patterns are ideal for content that needs to remain consistent or that you want to reuse on multiple pages or posts
